Kids Cough Remedy
If you're reading this chances are your kid is already sick. I am here to help. So we all hate it when our kids get sick but I really hate the coughs because if you dont catch them in time they just get really bad before they get worse and our little ones are not comfortable and not feeling well you know they are in pain and there is really not much we can do to comfort them.
Until now.
I am very very frustrated with the medical system and how it is utterly failing us as parents and caregivers. So I have been doing my own research and finding things that work for me and have worked for human kind for millions of years well at least I think millions of years lol.
First thing is first you need to make sure your child is getting plenty of water. Yes water and sometimes plain tap water just isn't good enough. The Ph balance of tap water is usually alright but not exactly what you want for fighting off any kind of illness especially a cold.
So you need to go find some High PH Water for your kid. I like and trust the brand Essentia because I have tested it several times and it always tests 8.5 or higher up to 10 and that was only once that it was at a 10 but you dont want more than 10 so that is great news for us parents. You can always choose your own brand I just highly suggest you test the water yourself and make sure that it is consistent with what the label says. Another option if you can afford it is reverse osmosis.
Ok your kid needs to drink drink drink as much as you can get them too but not any less than 6 full table glass fills a day which sometimes can be tricky. I find that giving them saltines or anything salty really will help you out a lot just try your best to stay away from cheese or dairy products because that tends to make the mucus worse. when you are fighting a cold mucus is the enemy.
Ok so next you wanna make sure you get tons of vitamin c into their system so giving them vitamins to start and then any fruit that is high in vitamin c is perfect. Blue berries, oranges, and kiwi are great options. Next you wanna give them anything they will eat that is organic and has lots of vitamins and nutrients. Bananas are wonderful and very easy for them to eat. I also suggest tomatoes, cucumbers, salads if they can chew easily. If they have been coughing for a while most foods will hurt when swallowing so a good broth is wonderful to just make them feel all warm and cozy inside and full plus you can usually get them to eat crackers and fruits alongside the broth. I am sure you have more foods in mind and please feel free to share in the comments with whatever suggestions you think I should add here.
Next you need to make sure that they are getting things like Eucalyptus, Echinacea, Elderberry, Turmeric, Garlic, Ginger, lemon and honey into their body because these are the best antibiotic antibacterial and overall super healers that you can give your child to boost their immune system and kickstart their healing process. The best way to do this is with what I call tea shots yes we are going there you are gonna do shots with your child and it will be fun I promise. So make a concentrated tea with preferably raw ginger, garlic, turmeric and lemon. Add Manuka Honey with a UMF of +15 do not buy any other Manuka hone I have done the research and this type is the best. Add Organic lemons not regular lemons regular lemons do not have the healing properties and are a waist of money. find tea that has Echinacea and elderberry already in it and do not feed your child eucalyptus that is not put into the tea shots... What you wanna do is get the tea all done in little water like 3 cups of water boiled with the ingredients (not the eucalyptus) boiled in as well... OK next get your shot glasses out cool the tea and then set up a humidifier
set the humidifier on all the time not the 1 2 or 6 hour cycle but all the time cuz you want this going as much as possible because that is what you are putting the eucalyptus in and that's the fastest way to get the eucalyptus to do its thing and get into your child's lungs and start to heal and clear them up. You can also add peppermint, lavender, chamomile and manuka essential oils to the humidifier... Do not worry about putting oils into your humidifier they can take it and really when its your kid who cares if it messes it up and you cant use it again I certainly dont.
so you got your humidifier on and you are ready to do shots with your kid make it a fun game where if they can do the shot faster than you they win... like I dont know a Pokémon card or something cool. get them to do at least one shot twice a day. this will make a huge difference I swear. Ok ok next you need to get them in the bath and get it good and steamed up before so you can put up to 5 drops of the eucalyptus into the water and it steams into their lungs it will also go into their skin but you want it to get into their lungs. You can also run a shower for them with fresh eucalyptus hanging from the shower head which works so much better than the oils but its not as easy to deal with and you have to change it every 3 days but hey its the best so I always do it.
Make sure they are cozy so you want to keep their clothes comfy and their areas comfy with soft blankets and pillows but you also wanna make it so they dont feel stuck because they can go stir crazy and cause you to go crazy so give them their screens give them their Legos give them their board games do stuff with them and keep them entertained...
Next at night is the worse so you wanna prepare by doing a saline spray in each nostril before bed they wont like it but it thins the mucus and makes the coughing way way better next give them one spoon full of the manuka honey and if then set them up so they are not laying flat. You want to make it easy for them to cough but also dont want the drip to get out of control which it will if they are on their side or flat they need to be sitting up.
Now you want to bust out the Vicks vapor rub you got your humidifier going because like I said you set it to the on position and you have it full of water and eucalyptus but now you wanna take that Vicks vapor rub and put it on their temples, their forehead, under their nose above their upper lip and on their chest and last but not least on the bottom of their feet yes the bottom of their feet. Vicks vapor rub will pull the toxins out of their body when you put it on the bottom of their feet and it actually helps keep the cough down.
Now last thing is having the Tylenol handy if your kid starts to spike a fever you need to be ready because on the one hand you want them to get the fever to sweat out the nasty but you also dont want that fever to go higher than 100 so as soon as you get that 99 wait 2 min check wait 2 min check as long as it is holding leave it the second it hits 100 give them a dose of Tylenol this will break the fever before it gets out of control if you wait past 100 it can jump very fast and the Tylenol may take too long to get it back down which sometimes will not even work. If your kid gets a fever of 102 and it doesn't go down in an hour take them to the er immediately Do not fuck around with a fever they are deadly.
Now some of you are going to really hate this but if your kid is coughing every 20 seconds or every 30 seconds they are in pain and they wont be able to sleep and they wont be able to heal so I will give my kids a half dose of a cough medicine I would take to get myself to sleep so I have been using Theraflu cough and cold but in the past I have used NyQuil, coricidin, delsym and Mucinex all of which can cause hallucinations which is why I now only use Theraflu cough and cold... I mean Tylenol cough and cold is alright but still pretty heavy so I stay away from it if I can help it but again the thing is if your kid cant sleep they cant heal and sometimes you need to go to the extreme to help them out... NOW that is not to say there are not alternatives that can work as well like valerian root or holding them and rocking them or whatever but if you dont sleep you're not helping your kid and if your kid still wont sleep because they just cant stop coughing long enough to sleep then do something about it dont just ignore it.
You have got to watch out for signs of the cold changing over to pneumonia.
look for these signs if you see them you need to take action of some kind which could be calling your doctor to start with all the way to if you feel like you need to then go to the ER and just its better safe than sorry:
- Retractions – the skin sucking in between the ribs or over the collarbone with each breath, so that you can see the outline of every rib or the collarbone with each inhalation; this is often seen with wheezing
- Flaring – the nostrils expanding and contracting with each breath
- Grunting – a deep, short, hoarse sound made with an exhalation; more commonly seen in babies or toddlers in severe distress
- Stridor – a high-pitched grating sound when trying to breathe in, often seen with croup
- Difficulty completing sentences – a child who can speak might suddenly be unable to complete a sentence without taking breaths between words
- Rapid breathing – children will often breathe a little faster than normal when they have a fever, much like a puppy panting to blow off hot air. But a child breathing quickly at rest when a fever is gone is likely a child in distress.
- Urgently – if there are any of the Signs of Distress
- Within 24 hours – if there is cough + fever and:
- You can’t bring the fever down with a proper dose of Tylenol or ibuprofen (see the blue bar at the top of the page here for proper dosing), OR
- The fever lasts 3 or more days, OR
- The fever came on in the middle of the illness—this means that the infection has changed, so we’d need to rule out pneumonia, an ear infection, or some other secondary infection.
- Within a day or two – if the cough has lasted longer than two weeks. While the average cold in kids lasts 15-25 days, I like to take a listen to any child who’s coughed longer than two weeks just to make sure that we aren’t missing a wheeze or mild pneumonia.
The thing is you dont want to go to the doctor unless you really have to because 9 times out of 10 they are not going to do anything but make you wait in the waiting room (not fun for you or for your child) take forever to actually get to you after the nurse does her preliminary screening and now days they always force a damn swab up their nose which only makes them cough even worse and if your kid doesn't have pneumonia they wont do a damn thing to help you other than maybe and this is a huge maybe prescribe a cough syrup, which used to be a painkiller however now is just the same thing I mentioned before that is in the over the counter cough medicines that I said you would hate me over suggesting (yeah your doctor will prescribe it even though its not good for your kid to take... to be fair they will try not to and they will tell you to give the kid Tylenol not super helpful at all)
So you just took your kid to the doctor or hospital and they tell you that your pretty much overreacted and sent you home with nothing but get rest drink water... they wont tell you about any of the herbal natural things I have told you about and you will feel frustrated and your child will be exsosted from the whole ordeal. So Please pay attention to the signs and do not wait if they are showing up but I mean you're an adult like dont let anxiety or fear make you see something that isn't their or even make you miss something that is there... this is where having two sets of eyes as in a partner is extremely helpful.
Your kid can be sick up to 25 days with a cough and that's because the mucus just takes forever to clear and the healing wont start till it does. So the best thing you can do is get water in your kid and get that eucalyptus into them as well because that is what breaks up that mucus.
good luck and God Speed.
